UPDATED COMPUTING ACTION PLAN (MARCH 2017)
During GPP, I saw very little in the way of computing in the classroom. That said, I have seen (and blogged about):
1. E-safety for key stage 1 and 2
2. Assessment
3. Use of Smartboard technologies
4. Detailed a cross-curricular computing lesson
5. Use of iPads/Laptops to play curriculum games
6. Use of assistive technology
7. Finding appropriate resources online
8. Use of blogging and social media
On FPP (in key stage 1) I will continue to look at ways of teaching Computing (which is a national curriculum subject). I have already blogged about how coding can be taught across key stage 1 and key stage 2. I will provide more examples of my developing pedagogy as FPP continues, under the guidance of my new mentor, who is the school's ICT co-ordinator.

MY COMPUTING ACTION PLAN - OCTOBER 2016
Name: Jack G
Tutor: Lise H
Computing/ICT Qualifications/ Experience:
PGCE Computing Audit revealed these priorities:
Aside from the compulsory elements of the computing course:
The priority must then be to find out about theory and use technologies that I have no experience of. I will first prioritise Key Stage One technologies and theories above Key Stage Two, as this learning will naturally feed into Key Stage Two technologies and theories.
And then Key Stage 2 technologies:
I believe I will be presented with other priorities after learning the basics of the above:
Action I will take in September/October
I will learn how to use technologies that will be of use in both a KS1 and KS2 settings so that I am prepared for either as my first placement. This will include (but is not limited to) researching the following:
I will also write about other technologies and theories that I come across that could help me on placement.
Action I will take on GPP
Tutor: Lise H
Computing/ICT Qualifications/ Experience:
- GCSE in ICT (2003) – this taught about theoretical things like file sizes, networks and types of memory. My recall of this is poor.
- Areas of my degree – Multimedia (I created a drum kit on Flash). Film editing – I shot and edited my own short films on AVID, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, and scored them on Garageband. Audio Editing – I regularly edited radio programmes on Adobe Audition and Audacity. Specialist writing software – Final Draft.
- Basic knowledge of using an interactive whiteboard (Promethean board) for activities such as phonics games (on Phonics Play), and ‘Powerpoint’ style modelling on ‘Flipchart’ – although I have never created one.
- Basic knowledge of using iPads (book creator, camera, KS1 ‘Espresso’ activities for Maths and Phonics)
- Competent at using Word and Excel.
- Knowledgeable at using Class Dojo – six months of experience using this.
- Have used Bee Bots once, but sketchy on the details.
- Have used Scratch once, but sketchy on the details.
PGCE Computing Audit revealed these priorities:
Aside from the compulsory elements of the computing course:
- KS1 and 2 theories of Computer Science, IT and Digital Literacy.
- Coding (for example on Beebot, Scratch, Scratch Jr, Kodu.
- E-Safety and cyberbullying.
The priority must then be to find out about theory and use technologies that I have no experience of. I will first prioritise Key Stage One technologies and theories above Key Stage Two, as this learning will naturally feed into Key Stage Two technologies and theories.
- Creating engaging ‘Flipchart’/Powerpoints to use in class
- Daisy the Dinosaur
- Voting devices
- Administration systems (such as SIMS)
- Scratch Jr and Scratch (in more depth)
And then Key Stage 2 technologies:
- Makey Makey
- Basic coding in HTML
- Spreadsheets
- Graphics
- Animation
- Mobile App Publishing
I believe I will be presented with other priorities after learning the basics of the above:
- Using computing so that it does not obscure the subject
- Cover the computing elements of the National Curriculum
- Teach computing elements of other core subjects
- Theory – such as data protection and copyright.
Action I will take in September/October
I will learn how to use technologies that will be of use in both a KS1 and KS2 settings so that I am prepared for either as my first placement. This will include (but is not limited to) researching the following:
- Scratch Jr
- How to create effective and engaging flipchart/powerpoints for Interactive Whiteboards
- How to find engaging resources on the internet/using social media.
- Improve basic coding skills.
I will also write about other technologies and theories that I come across that could help me on placement.
Action I will take on GPP
- Provide practical examples of using technologies in the classroom – such as administration systems, voting devices and iPads.
- Practical data-logging in the classroom.
- Reflect on how I used the technology – what went well? Even better if...?
- Consider how technology might improve attainment, and provide examples of when it does not.
- How to use iPads/Android tablets/laptops in an engaging way that does not obscure the subject.
